For this week’s edition of Dandy Day, we got a glimpse into the colorful world of Kristine Barilli, a music supervisor, DJ & fashion designer.

You can usually find Kristine spinning an array of rare and eclectic vinyl at Public Records in Gowanus, Brooklyn where she is the music supervisor and resident DJ. She also holds down a monthly radio show on The Lot Radio and is the co-designer of OMIN, a luxurious vintage costume and couture clothing brand. To put it simply: Kristine has created her dream job that allows her to indulge in her most sacred passions every day: music, sharing experiences, and creating one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art.

Okay! Now it’s time to walk through a day in the life of Kristine.

9:00 am:

Every morning I wake up around 9:00 am and ruminate on a project for a client musically. If I’m not working on that, I work on slowly pulling records for my monthly radio show TOTALLY CORRUPT on The Lot Radio. Then I make coffee with my Chemex and deep roasters coffee beans and have a giant bowl of coconut milk yogurt with berries and nuts.

10:00 am:

Then comes my skincare routine. I swear by Rituel Sacred Serum. It’s essentially all natural fillers and botox in a bottle. This serum makes my skin glow, prevents acne and has significantly reduced visible signs of aging. In terms of moisturizers and eye creams, I can’t live without La Roche Posay. They make perfect products for acne prone skin and keep it simple. Also for toner, BULY Ionized Toner #2  is incredible for evening out skin tone and preventing and significantly reducing acne. It has colloidal silver, magnesium, and zinc, which are like nature’s version of Accutane.

11:00 am:

l do my morning meditation and then head over to Public Records in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where I’m the music booker & record and book curator. I scour the city and world for rare records to supply the shop with and curate a rotating roster of rare book and ephemera collectors that we highlight in the shop. I also DJ weekly at Public Records and host the city’s most eclectic and interesting vinyl DJs.

Public Records does a lot of incredible things for the community, including being a plastic free venue and serving some of the best vegan food in the city! They have really become my second family.

1:00 pm:My music supervision work through my agencies Dirty Soup and Raina has landed me commercials with Stella Artois, Audi, countless hotels and restaurants as well as art openings and fashion shows. Curating a space or event sonically is something that is second nature to me, but the most important part of my job are the travels that come with discovering these records originating from cultures and countries spanning decades. The magic really lies in the anthropology. Digging into music from Cairo and Bangkok were some of the most inspiring experiences I’ve ever had with collecting records. The people and sonic landscape are so fascinating and to be able to use this music today and share it with people is my main purpose in doing all of this. There are so many beautiful places and people in this world and discovering their art from decades prior and making it available to the community is really special to me. 3:00 pm:When working on our clothing company OMIN, my partner Amber Doyle and I will head to the studio and coordinate with our production manager Stacey who helps us get orders out and facilitates all the beadwork and detailing that each hand made garment receives. Creating Omin was a dream come true, as Amber and I are both insane vintage collectors. To be able to be inspired by and reproduce rare vintage and costume pieces has been an incredible journey that we are both really proud of.

Lastly, I pull records for my set at Public Records which is every Saturday! I host a guest and we play our favorite records of the moment and create the soundtrack for evening dinner service. It’s been quite the lifesaver during the pandemic!
