Where You Should Stay For A Casual Getaway or Even Host A Woodsy Wedding: Callicoon Hills

An early 19th century boarding house-turned-vacation-resort, Callicoon Hills is a compound-style hotel set in Callicoon Center, NY that’s been reimagined for the modern leisure-seeker in need of an informal and elegant getaway.

With the hotel’s retro Borscht Belt-inspired design and its spacious 23 acre-layout, Callicoon Hills is situated on a special slice of lush land surrounded by the burgeoning towns of Callicoon, Roscoe and Livingston Manor.

Pulling up to the bucolic entrance on a Wednesday afternoon, I checked in early with no hassle and was welcomed by a fairly quiet and serene scene. There were a few people working at their rustic-mod on-site Rise & Shine Coffee Club, which has everything from quinoa bowls and cold brew to frozen margaritas and egg sandwiches. If you have work to do, have no fear: there is a strong WiFi signal. There’s also a bunch of board games you can borrow and a cornhole setup on the grounds if you’re on vacation time.

We stayed for a night in the Pool House, which is minimalist, modern and strategically placed for me, as I’m actually part fish. I had the entire pool to myself, so if that just stirred something in you, you’ll want to stay on a weekday too. The resort just opened this summer, so there was still an air of “in construction” permeating the grounds, but it was an incredible preview to what the future holds for this beautifully designed resort.

As it stands, the primary draw for staying at Callicoon Hills is its vast layout anchored by a rustic barn and charming pond that’s just steps away from a woodland creek backdrop. The barn, outdoor tent and sprawling atmosphere make for a country classy event space that’s near perfect for holding 200-person weddings and events. Let’s just say if I were planning a wedding, I would 100% consider hosting it at Callicoon Hills.

Unfortunately, we missed out on The Conover Club, the hotel’s onsite restaurant open Thursday-Monday—but I’ve only heard good things and was genuinely bummed we couldn’t eat there.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a Labor Day Weekend plan, definitely checkout The Farmhouse Project’s lovely Maker’s Market hosted by Callicoon Hills. The multi-day event will feature a rotation of hand-selected artisans, purveyors of fine food, specialty cocktails, and live music!

Some Insider Tips:

  • Stay Thurs-Mon if you want to experience The Conover Club

  • Visit the hotel’s the on-site store for amazing merch

  • Lather up with the Malin & Goetz products in the bathrooms

  • Eat at The Arnold House one night during your stay, which is 5 mins away

  • If beef jerky/hot sauce is your thing, you’ll definitely want to check out the nearby Van Smokey

  • Pop over to the North Branch Inn for bowling and dinner
